Madwa is working with a master weaver, Mr Solofo, who makes fine silk lamba shawls drawing on traditional patterns and techniques. He does his weaving in his backyard, taking 2 weeks to make a small piece. Depending on the time of year, he may be using natural or chemical dyes to produce the colours he wants. The natural dyes are seasonal as they are dependent on the harvest cycle of certain vegetable roots. Mr Solofo is renowned throughout the central highlands, the weaving heartland of Madagascar as he is one of a handful of individuals still practising such fine and intricate weaving.
